Cultural Landscape

The historically rich Riverview Lands.
The Riverview Lands are rich with history.
The Riverview lands are rich with culture and history, which is mirrored by its architectural styles and features, its grand landscape, its tree collection and natural areas, and even its roadways. Individually these features and elements tell a story, but together they create a cultural landscape and profile Riverview's sense of place.

A cultural landscape is the integration of built features and the natural environment that consists of four parts:

  • The integration of built and natural landscape elements,
  • Patterns of human activity,
  • Points of view, philosophies or ways of doing things that are a product of a particular place and time, and
  • Shared community and cultural meanings among people.

A Riverview Lands Cultural Landscape Report has been prepared (a copy will be posted once finalized). Through a series of workshops (spring/fall 2008), stewardship committee members provided comment on the report and discussed the values and potential management options for the lands' cultural landscape features. This work will be included in any future potential planning processes.

Community Heritage Register

In early 2008, the City of Coquitlam recognized the Riverview lands' heritage value by including it in its Community Heritage Register and by adopting a statement of significance. This inclusion automatically places the lands on the Provincial Heritage Register, although it does not formally designate them as heritage.
